Dans la langue qui convient le mieux.\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/fxWS06Go7CA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Luxembourg is rolling out its multilingual school project to guarantee greater success for children from linguistically diverse backgrounds.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For several years now, numerous studies have been revealing a worrying fact: pupils who speak neither L\u00ebtzebuergesch nor German at home experience greater difficulties at school from an early age. This now affects two thirds of the country&#8217;s pupils. To remedy this imbalance, the Ministry of Education launched the \u2018<strong>ALPHA &#8211; zesumme wuessen\u2019 pilot project<\/strong>, which has now been validated and is ready to be rolled out to all basic schools from the start of the 2026\/2027 school year.  <\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:32px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is the \u2018ALPHA &#8211; zesumme wuessen\u2019 project?<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Implemented since 2022 in four pilot schools (in Differdange, Dudelange, Larochette and Schifflange), <strong>ALPHA<\/strong> offers a major innovation: allowing families to choose their child&#8217;s literacy language, between <strong>German and French<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">144 children were taught to read and write in the language closest to their family environment, while continuing to learn the country&#8217;s <strong>three official languages<\/strong> (L\u00ebtzebuergesch, German and French).<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Objective: greater equity in education<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The approach aims to break down language barriers by giving each child a solid grounding in the language with which they are most comfortable. The project also reinforces the use of <strong>L\u00ebtzebuergesch as a language of integration and socialisation<\/strong>, without excluding other languages from the school curriculum. <\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:32px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Positive scientific evaluation: concrete results<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On 11 July 2025, Claude Meisch, Minister for Education, presented the results of the evaluation of the project, carried out with the support of <strong>LUCET \/ Universit\u00e9 du Luxembourg<\/strong>, the <strong>Scientific Council<\/strong>, teaching teams and families.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Key points of the assessment :<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2705 <strong>Better performance <\/strong>at school when the child is literate in a familiar language.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2705 <strong>Increased motivation<\/strong> and well-being in the classroom.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2705 <strong>Increased student participation<\/strong> in class.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2705 <strong>Strengthening the role of L\u00ebtzebuerg\u00ebsch<\/strong> in the education system.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u2705 High level of satisfaction<\/strong> among parents and improved collaboration with teachers.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All those involved &#8211; teachers, parents, scientists &#8211; recommend that the <strong>ALPHA project be extended<\/strong> to all schools.<\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:32px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gradual roll-out from 2026<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In view of the positive results, the government has approved a <strong>draft bill <\/strong>to extend <strong>ALPHA &#8211; zesumme wuessen<\/strong> to all basic schools in the country:<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\ud83d\udcc5 <strong>Start: start of school year 2026\/2027<\/strong> (cycle 1.2)<br\/>\u27a1\ufe0f Gradual extension to subsequent cycles until 2032\/2033.<\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:32px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">ALPHA in practice: one class, two languages<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The example of <strong>Leni and Andrea<\/strong> in Larochette illustrates the project perfectly: in the same class, Leni learns to read in German, Andrea in French. And yet, both are progressing together, with the same chances of success. <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Frequently asked questions (FAQ)<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u27a1\ufe0f Do pupils who are literate in French still learn German?<\/strong><br\/>Yes, trilingualism remains central. All children continue to learn Luxembourgish, German and French.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u27a1\ufe0f Is Luxembourgish still important?<\/strong><br\/>Absolutely. It remains a language of socialisation, integration and teaching in many disciplines. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u27a1\ufe0f Is there a minimum number of students required to create an ALPHA group?<\/strong><br\/>No. Even a single student has the right to literacy adapted to his or her linguistic profile. <\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:32px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conclusion: a turning point for schools in Luxembourg<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>ALPHA &#8211; zesumme wuessen<\/strong> project marks a significant step towards a more <strong>inclusive, equitable and modern<\/strong> school system in Luxembourg. By taking into account the linguistic realities of families, the country is offering every child the best chance of success, from the earliest years.
